Many clients who are looking at Ikea kitchen cabinets and installation like the nice clean lines and the inexpensive, yet high scale look that the cabinets offer.
If you are looking to do a kitchen remodel and want to use Ikea, then there are some steps you can take to make it a smooth process.
Use the IKEA Kitchen Planner
Do some homework first and measure the exact dimensions for the kitchen area you are building. Then go to the Ikea kitchen planner, enter your kitchen dimensions and start planning out how you want it all to look.
The kitchen planner which is web based is sometimes slow at rendering but it does a great job of giving you a 3D look of your projected kitchen space with the items you picked and how much each piece will cost. The planner also spits out a shopping list that you can save and share with your IKEA installer.
At this point, you’re going to spend quite a bit of time in this program. It’s something I really enjoy working through with clients, but some people don’t have the patience. If you feel it’s too tedious, you can give me the dimensions and an overview of what you’re looking for and we can plan it out for you.
I’ve seen people actually put off getting their new kitchen because they didn’t have the patience to work through the planning phase. On the other end of that, I had a friend who just ordered some cabinets because they just knew it would all fit. The boxes sat in the dining room for quite a while because there was no set plans of where the cabinets would actually go. And he did this while I was out of town so I didn’t know about it.
IKEA Ordering
Once you create your kitchen plan, you have everything you need to order your kitchen. Again, make sure you’ve added everything like the IKEA toe kicks and cover panels that give the kitchen cabinets a finished and built in look. You can always order more cover panels to use as fillers and return them if they weren’t used.
If you are looking to do an IKEA kitchen within 3-6 months, look out for the two times a year that IKEA has their 10-20% off sale the entire kitchen purchase from IKEA. Previous sales had a certain amount that you had to spend to get the 20% discount. The last three IKEA sales have been 10% with no minimum order to receive discount. Either way these can be big savings on your kitchen remodel.
Also if you signed up for IKEA’s family membership, and you ordered your kitchen at full price, if the cabinets go on sale within 90 days of your receipt, you can take your receipt to IKEA and they will give you a refund.
IKEA Installation Service
IKEA attracts several DIY’ers who want to save more money by installing it themselves and you can do that if you’re fairly handy.
Many of the IKEA installation installers, including GatorMod, charges a by the cabinet fee. Ours is $125/cabinet and that’s to assemble and install the cabinets as well as all drawer hardware, cabinet inserts, cover panels, fillers and handles.
Any modifications or island applications will be an added charge.
When working with clients, we have a seen a small condo kitchen cost $5300 that includes the IKEA kitchen cabinets, countertop, lights, flooring, and refrigerator. On the high end IKEA kitchens have cost $18,000 for a complete remodel of a mid century modern kitchen in Gainesville, FL.
Conclusion
As with everything, the ranges can and do vary greatly depending on the size and scope of your remodeling efforts, but starting out with a vision and a plan can help narrow down the costs and planning it out during their semi-annual sales events can help even more.
