I’ve been installing Ikea kitchen cabinets in Gainesville, FL for the past few years now and really came to enjoy working with the Akurum kitchen cabinets.
Ikea updated their kitchen cabinet offerings back in February 2015 that removed the 20 year old Akurum style and replaced it with the new Sektion. Many homeowners had some space issues with the Akurum, so the promise of more cabinet dimensions was exciting to hear about.
When I would install an Ikea kitchen for a client who ordered Akurum, there would be some interesting custom items we ended up placing in a few areas because the Akurum’s cabinet dimensions were a little lacking.
One customized item I did was created a small pull out spice rack for a client that was right next to her stove. This worked out really well for her since she loves to cook and having the spices right there works well for her.
Another small Ikea modification I did was to replace dead space area with a small wine rack built into the cabinet.
Ikea Sektion Cabinets
With the new Ikea Sektion cabinets, homeowners now have more sizes to choose from which will help reduce the issue of the dead space. You also have different cabinet doors to choose from.
With the new Sektion, you also have dedicated filler pieces instead of using toe kicks for filler like we use to do with the Akurum.
The installation process is mostly the same, but with the old system we had cabinet railing system for installing the cabinets to the wall for just the wall mounts. Now with the Sektion, they’ve added the railing system to the base cabinets as well.
So how does that help?
Floors can be uneven and adding the cabinet footing and moving the base cabinets around would be a pain. With the railing system, you just add the base to the rail and move it where it needs to go. Then you can add the cabinet footing and adjust the height afterwards.
They also added the ability to add integrated lighting to the cabinets which is great since homeowners were left with not much choice with the older system.
Ikea Sektion Cabinets Kitchen Planner
Using the Ikea kitchen planner is still the best way to plan out your new kitchen and I still recommend measuring you kitchen area, putting that info into the planner and start playing with the different designs.
As you are working on your new kitchen in the software, keep some things in mind when doing it.
- Moving plumbing will increase the cost
- Moving or adding electricity will increase the labor costs
- If you can keep the overall layout the same, you’ll be able to save since there won’t be any major structural changes.
If you’ve been planning your kitchen with Akurum, then you’ll need to update the planner to the new Sektion.
I’m working with a client who was ready for me to install everything this past March. Then as she went to buy her kitchen, all the items in Akurum were sold out and she had to start all over with the Sektion.
So, move your stuff over as soon as possible. The Akurum kitchen plan will only be available to view until September 2015 when they completely remove it from their system.
Ikea Sektion Cabinets Warranty
Just like all Akurum kitchens were backed with a 25 year warranty, Ikea is also backing the Sektion kitchen with a 25 year warranty.
Conclusion
As you start working on your new kitchen designs, if you have any questions about the new system, feel free to reach out and I’ll help in any way I can.

Hello! Thanks for this article. I’m considering buying a used Akurum kitchen but will need to add two lazy susan corner units and a pantry. Do you think it would be possible to mix and match from the Sektion line with a bit of retro-fitting? Thank you!
Hi, I’d say it’s doable, but unless you’re getting those cabinets for very cheap, I would go with the Sektion cabinets, since they are easier to install. There are also more options for doors for the sektion cabinets. Thanks again for commenting on our site. Jena
